Meet our Senior Medical Director, Amit Saxena

 

Dr. Saxena specializes in Geriatric Medicine and completed his fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine in Springfield, MA.  In 2008, Dr. Amit Saxena joined Essen Healthcare and advanced his career as the Senior Medical Director for Essen Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation. He specializes in providing quality medical care to our adult and elderly patient population which include primary, urgent and palliative care. Dr. Saxena is certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and The Art of Medicine at the end of life care. In 2011, he was the recipient of “Excellence in Medical Care “by the Bronx County Medical Society. He is also an outstanding preceptor for Essen Healthcare’s Clinical Clerkship Program

Meet our Senior Medical Director , Shervin Mortazavi, MD

 Being in practice for over 26 years, Shervin Mortazavi, MD is an Internist in Bronx, NY. He received his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences School of Medicine and completed his residency at Englewood Hospital & Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Mortazavi leads the Nursing and Rehabilitation Division at Essen Healthcare and is President of The Bronx County Medical Society. Furthermore, he is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, Montefiore Medical Center and Mount Sinai. Dr. Mortazavi is board certified in Internal Medicine and is also certified in hypnosis from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Dr. Sumir Sahgal is the Chief Medical Officer of Essen Health Care, an integrated delivery system providing medical care in offices, urgent care centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and patient homes (through its medical house call service).  Dr. Sahgal founded his primary care practice out of one South Bronx office in 1999; it has since grown to 9 locations throughout the Bronx and expanded to include specialist services.  Essen is now one of the largest private multi-specialty medical groups in the Bronx, and was among the first to achieve the ‘Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home’ designation in the state of New York.

Leveraging the use of HIT, real-time access to electronic records, and the ability to e-prescribe medications from patient bedsides, Dr. Sahgal launched EssenMED House Calls in 2005 to extend primary care services beyond office walls and into patient homes. EssenMED House Calls is now the largest medical house call provider in the New York City & Westchester Area. EssenMED House Calls’ comprehensive services allow countless seniors to be treated with dignity in the comfort of their homes. In addition to EssenMED House Calls, Dr. Sahgal founded Metro Urgicare, a quickly growing urgent care practice that offers rapid responsive treatment for patients. Metro Urgicare recently inaugurated its 3^rd urgent care location in Brooklyn, with plans to open 20 more centers in the near future.

Dr. Sahgal has received numerous awards throughout his career. In 2015, he was named ‘House Call Doctor of the Year’ by the American Academy of Home Care Medicine and received a ‘Community Leadership Award’ from the Visiting Nurse Service of Westchester. Additionally, Dr. Sahgal was honored with the ‘Physician Executive of the Year Award’ by the Medical Group Management Association. Most recently, he was appointed to the State Board of Medicine by the New York State Education Department, for a five-year term.

A graduate of Delhi University, New Delhi, India, Dr. Sahgal completed his Internal Medicine Residency training program at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY and holds a Masters degree in Health Policy and Management from New York University. Among his notable accomplishments and leadership roles, Dr. Sahgal is currently a Governing Council member of the International Medical Graduates (IMG) section of American Medical Association. He is also the Bronx District Councilor for the American College of Physicians, and serves as the Chair of the IMG section, Medical Society of the State of New York. He serves as a board member on various nonprofit committees, and this year, Dr. Sahgal founded NY Reach, a nonprofit dedicated to improving community health and workforce development.  Dr. Sahgal also sits on the board of Balance ACO, where he also serves as Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director.

Essen’s Clinical Clerkship Program Sees 16 Applicants Match for Residency

 

Bronx, NY (March 30, 2016)— Essen Medical Associates is proud to announce that 16 participants of its Clinical Clerkship program, a program designed to prepare International Medical Graduates (IMG’s) for residency application,recently matched. The placement offers encompassed a number of competitive hospitals including, but not limited to, Mt. Sinai St. Lukes, Bronx Lebanon, and South Nassau. This pool of 16 represents over 40% of the program’s active applicants. Since its inception in 2005, Essen’s Clinical Clerkship program has provided an outlet to international medical graduates looking to garner the domestic clinical experience necessary for U.S. residency program placement.The program is offered as either a part-time or full-time position, geared toward helping participants accrue clinical hours to more competitively position their application and enhanced qualifications for possible residency placement in the U.S. In addition to providing hands-on clinical experience, Essen Medical offers opportunities for employment, networking, and research & publication outlets for all IMG program participants. “The clerkship program was a great opportunity for me to gain valuable hands-on experience,” shared Charles Odom, a clerkship participant who successfully matched in the Psychiatry residency program at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. “I gained clinical experience that’s not easily accessible to an international medical graduate.”From launching the program with a handful of dedicated IMGs, to the current long standing enrollment of over 100 rotating members of various medical graduate specialties and levels, the program has ushered many aspiring physicians into the medical field throughout New York State and beyond.

Dr. Sumir Sahgal, a Board-Certified Internist, is the Chief Medical Officer of Essen Medical Associates, P.C., Balance ACO and EssenMED House Calls. Dr. Sahgal is motivated to provide the highest quality care to his patients by combining the latest advances in medicine, patient-centered compassionate care, and leading-edge information technology. Dr. Sahgal has been recognized as one of the ‘Early Adopters’ of Electronic Health Records in New York City. Recently, Dr. Sahgal was inducted into the inaugural class of Health Information Technology (HIT) Fellows.A graduate of the University of Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College, Dr. Sahgal completed his Internal Medicine Residency training program at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, and holds a Master’s degree in Health Policy and Management from New York University. Medical students from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Geriatric Fellows from Montefiore Medical Center receive part of their training at Kings Harbor.
